📖 About the FIFA World Cup
Origin: FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) was founded in 1904 in Paris. The idea for a World Cup was proposed by Jules Rimet (FIFA President 1921–1954). The first tournament was held in Uruguay in 1930.
The Jules Rimet Trophy: The original gold-plated sterling silver trophy was awarded from 1930 to 1970. Brazil won it outright after their third title in 1970. The trophy was stolen twice — once in England (1966, found by a dog named Pickles) and once in Brazil (1983, never recovered; a replica now held).
Current FIFA World Cup Trophy: Designed by Italian sculptor Silvio Gazzaniga, introduced in 1974. Made of 18-carat gold, weighs 6.175 kg, stands 36.8 cm. Winning teams receive a gold-plated replica — only FIFA keeps the original.
Format Today: 32 teams (1998–2022). Expanded to 48 teams from 2026 (USA, Canada, Mexico hosts).
Frequency: Every 4 years. Two World Cups (1942 and 1946) were cancelled due to World War II.
Key Awards: Golden Boot (top scorer), Golden Ball (best player), Golden Glove (best goalkeeper), Young Player Award (best U-21 player).
Exam Tip: Brazil (5 titles) is the most successful nation and the only country to have played in every World Cup. The FIFA World Cup is the most-watched sporting event on Earth — the 2022 Qatar final drew 1.5 billion viewers.
